Background

The Spurt in Substance Abuse has emerged as an unprecedented threat to the quality of human life. Apart from Alcohol which is certainly the oldest and the most widely abused substance, the abuse of Narcotic drugs and Psychotropic substances has proliferated across regions and countries leaving ugly scars in its wake. In India, research in various regions and population group confirms that Drug abuse and Alcoholism and free use of Tobacco products has infiltrated into all Socio-Cultural and Economic strata.

The Need

Catapulted from being just another satellite town into the electronic city of the National Capital Region, NOIDA has rightly earned the sobriquet, thanks to a steadily mushrooming range of business enterprises which prefer to set up their ventures in this city. Unfortunately, the monetary abundance all around has also brought in its wake all the vices associated with affluence. Even there is overwhelming evidence to prove that substance dependency among Noidaites is on the rise, and alarmingly so. Yes, even school and college students of the city have fallen easy victims. The problem of mood altering substance abuse have given rise to consequent severe problems and hazards in the lives of individuals, families, relationships and the society at large. Today’s life Style Diseases or the diseases which crops up from today’s fast faced life style are namely Stress, Depression, Irritations, Restlessness, Anxiety, Anger, Aggressions and Violence. People who are in it for them life seems Powerless and Unmanageable, a hopeless situation. These diseases are very infectious, the people around are equally even sometimes more affected. life for all becomes a living hell.

Specialised Professional Medical help, Positive and Unbiased Guidance, Therapeutic Counselling can often straighten out Physical Setbacks and Damages, Mental and Emotional tangles and Social-Economical unrests and Spiritual degradation. The De-Addiction centre is headed by Bappa Mukherjee, who for the last 20 years, equipped with Professional trainings and Crisis Management Skills from National and International Agencies is actively involved in the Addictive Substance Abuse Management and Prevention Interventions, Stress & Depression Management, Suicidal Interventions, HIV/AIDS Counselling through Spiritual Therapies and Inspirational and Motivational Cognitive Counselling to all those whose life is becoming Stressed, Stretched, Meaningless and under Challenge and Threat. Till date more than 1000 registrations have been recorded at the de-addiction centre for various problems and following interventions. Clients not only from Noida but also from neighbouring states are coming to the centre at Kailash Hospital, Noida for consultations, treatment, for cognitive counseling sessions and for relaxation therapies. people from all walks of life, age ranging from 7 years to 70 plus, both male and female with problems ranging from substance abuse (drugs, alcohol, tobacco and others mood altering substance), stress, depression and the suicidal are being helped and guided to lead a successful and productive life.

SUBSTANCES OF ABUSE

(ABUSE: A non-medical, unsanctioned and maladaptive pattern of use of a substance irrespective of its adverse physical, psychological and social consequences)
There is a wide range of natural or synthetic substances, a regular use of which leads to dependence and impairment of normal functioning of the individual. These can be broadly classified as:
  • Narcotic Analgesics including poppy plant, opium, morphine, codeine, heroin & brown sugar, pethidine and methadone.
  • Cannabis including marijuana (ganja), hashish (charas) and dried parts of cannabis plant (bhang).
  • Stimulants including amphetamines and cocaine.
  • Hallucinogens including LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide).
  • Depressants including sedative—hypnotics (barbiturates and benzodiazepines) and alcohol.
  • Nicotine in form of tobacco.
  • Caffeine in form of tea and coffee.

Consequences of Substance Abuse

In terms of the adverse consequences of substance abuse, it is universally recognised that:
  1. 1.At the individual level, substance abuse is associated with loss of physical strength, mental health problems, learning disabilities, interference with normal reproductive functions and damage to vital organs such as brain, heart and lungs.
  2. 1.At the family level, substance abuse tears the fabric of family life, causes emotional stresses and strains, places financial burden, endangers the future of younger generations and often makes woman vulnerable to victimization and at risk to drug usage themselves.
  3. 1.At the community level, substance abuse entails heavy social and economic costs, such as, alcohol-and drug-related accidents and deaths, wastage of manpower, rise in crime, and increased expenditure on law enforcement, prevention programmes, treatment and rehabilitation and social security.

Signs and Symptoms of Substance Abuse

In view of the specificity of the interaction between the individual, the substance and the situation that results into a Drug & Alcohol taking behaviour, it would be hazardous to draw any conclusive list of the first signs and symptoms of substance abuse to be commonly applicable. Generally some of the signs and symptoms are as:
  • Deterioration of physical appearance.
  • Repulsive smells on the body or clothes.
  • Unusual stains or marks on the skin or clothes.
  • Drowsiness or irregular sleep.
  • Unexplained mood changes.
  • Irritability or aggressive behaviour.

  • Borrowing or losing money.
  • Loss of valuables.
  • Irregular eating and loss in appetite.

  • Sudden shift in relationships and associates.
  • Spending long hours in the toilet or bathroom.

  • More than 300 million people in India use tobacco.
  • India is expected to lose 2.5 million people a year by 2025 due to growing tobacco consumption.
  • In tobacco smoke, there are 3,600 known chemicals, of which 20 can cause cancer.
  • India reports more than one million fresh cancer cases every year due to tobacco consumption.
  • Smoking causes knee pain, loss of cartilage.
  • Tobacco kills more than half its users.
  • Smokers are likely to be less happy—the pleasure they feel from having a smoke comes only because they’re addicted.
  • Smoking affects DNA sequence in Sperm and can lead to a child inheriting permanent genetic damage from father.

Alcohol

  • Chronic alcohol abuse reduces life expectancy by 15-20 years.
  • Alcohol raises the risk of 60 different diseases.
  • Indians take their first sip of alcohol at the age of 19 compared to 28 in the 1990s.
  • For every 6 men 1 woman drinks alcohol in India.
  • A person who drinks to the point of passing out can die if the concentration of alcohol in his or her bloodstream reaches a toxic level.
  • About 17% of adult men are addicted to alcohol.
  • Alcohol plays a role in nearly 30% of cases of cancer, liver, chest and throat diseases and is blamed for up to a third of all traffic accidents.
  • Too much beer may prompt pancreatic cancer onset.
  • In another couple of years, majority of Indians will start consuming alcohol at the age of 15.
  • Alcohol is a both stimulant and a depressant. It increases serotonin levels for a short while and then causes depression.
  • 47-50% of those who begin drinking alcohol before the age of 15 become alcohol dependent at some time in their lives, compared with 9-10% of those who wait at least until age 21.

Drugs

  • Cannabis (ganja, bhang) has seven times more tar and carbon monoxide than cigarettes.

Suicide: Mental Disorder found to be main cause

  • Mental disorders, particularly depression and substance abuse, are associated with more than 90% of all cases of suicide.
  • Suicide is now among the three leading causes of death among those aged 15-44 years (both sexes).
  • Though women attempt to commit suicide more, men usually become successful more often in their attempts.
